What exactly is a servo system? Understand the precision pairing of "motor + drive" in one article
In the selection meetings of many equipment factories, we often come across a common misunderstanding: purchasing servo motors and servo drives separately. Once installed, this leads to jitter, position loss and positioning deviation, which repeated debugging fails to resolve. The problem is often not in any single component, but in the fact that a servo is meant to be a coordinated system of "motor + drive" working together.
Why must a servo be purchased as a "matched set"?
The servo motor is responsible for "delivering torque" and the servo drive for "issuing commands". The motor's rotor inertia and encoder resolution must be strictly matched with the drive's control algorithm. If they come from different brands, the communication protocol, parameter definitions and response characteristics may not align, and the system will naturally become unstable. This is why CHNCHI insists on "integrated R&D of the servo system" - from ZE / ZF series servo motors to MZ series drives, tuned and commissioned on the same technology platform.
Three-loop control, in plain terms
The high precision of a servo comes from "closed-loop control", whose core is a three-layer structure:
· Position loop: Determines "where to go" - the external pulse frequency controls speed, and the pulse count controls the rotation angle, achieving precise positioning;
· Speed loop: Determines "how fast it runs" - PID regulation based on encoder feedback;
· Current loop: Determines "how much force to deliver" - current is detected via Hall sensors and fed back negatively to ensure stable torque.
These three loops are interlocked, and with real-time feedback from incremental / absolute encoders, they enable the equipment to achieve micron-level positioning and millisecond-level response.
CHNCHI Servo Solutions
· Servo motors: the power range covers 50W-110kW, including general-purpose and interior permanent magnet (IPM) types (ZE series), plus the high-power ZE18 / ZE25 series. Certain models offer IP67 / IP65 / IP54 protection ratings, and many have attained China's Level 1 energy efficiency certification;
· Servo drives: MZ630, MZ860, MZ870N and other series, supporting 220V / 380V input and compatible with pulse command, RS485, CAN bus, EtherCAT bus and other mainstream protocols;
· Among them, the MZ870N series EtherCAT bus servo drive delivers multi-axis synchronization and millisecond-level response, making it the ideal choice for Industry 4.0 smart manufacturing lines.
Selection tips: First calculate the load inertia and the required torque and speed, then decide on the communication protocol. For special structures, wide-temperature-range or high-protection operating conditions, you can turn to CHNCHI's non-standard customization workshop, which provides end-to-end support from solution design to commissioning.
